Wordless Wednesday - my dad and I

This is one of my absolute favourite photos from my childhood. It's me and my dad in front of the Christmas tree, and as you can see from his lovely hairdo (OK, I know he doesn't have much hair), goofy tie and ridiculous suspenders it's sometime in the 70s. I'm wearing my favourite pink dress with starfish.

As I'm writing this my dad is in hospital having surgery for the condition that is the bane of many older men, an enlarged prostate. Not much fun to read about perhaps, but it certainly hasn't been much fun for him for the last six months either.

My dad turned 80 in December and being of that older, stubborn generation he is not the easiest man to talk to, which leaves me feeling quite useless and helpless at times like these. I want to tell him that I'm thinking about him and that I love him, but he's never been very comfortable with receiving those kinds of words. So what I'll probably do instead is send him an extra jumbo-sized Toblerone. He'll know what that means. And in the meantime beam over as many positive vibes and thoughts to him as I possibly can. Maybe you will help me...

I think you should show him your love with little gifts, like Toblerone, etc, whatever he likes. A lot of people that age are not used to show their affection for somebody and therefore it makes them shy and embarrassed when he gets too much !(in his view)

That photo truly captures the 70s doesn't it as well as your relationship with your Dad. I really hope he recovers from the surgery quickly and that he loves and understands each bite of that chocolate bar.

warm wishes to your dad. Went through the same situation with my dad. Sometimes just the silly card, small present, or a gentle in person touch is more than enough to get the message across.

Ah, lovely seventies! Oh, I remember that kind of wallpapers too! It's fun seeing them now.

Well, at least it's pretty good prognosis with that enlarged prostata I think eve though it's no fun to get that.

I think you're doing the right thing there giving him that Toblerone. We have to adopt to the person that's there and accept that he is like that. He'll appreciate that the most.

What a precious picture! Thanks for sharing it.

Lots of good vibes coming your way. Toblerone is a great idea — we use chocolate for healing in our family, too! :)

Never too late for gushing sweet words. He will like it inside. Those stoic men are the easiest ones to please with sweet stuff. They just don't know it.
